Because who can resist a good (or bad) pun?
There will be many more of these, they're fun to make and a good use for all those odd wheel-thrown cups/pots/whatevers that happen. So I had the highly original (not) idea of sticking a funny face on it and adding a handle. And then the name 'Ugly Mugs' was tacked on somehow, and the professors seemed enamored with the idea, and the whole thing has kind of blown out of proportion.
Will have photos of the finished pieces up here at some point.
